The punch line was that while Eli’s tumor was in fact a GBM, it wasn’t as malignant and rapidly dividing as they typically are. His was on the low end of the cell growth–rate spectrum.

Even more surprising was the last line:

Margins are clean. No evidence of tumor in the additional biopsy specimens examined.

The dark material outside Eli’s tumor had no malignancy in it. I had removed the entire GBM with clean margins.

At the moment Eli was cancer-free.

A couple of weeks later, the tumor genetics came back from the outside lab. Grossman emailed it to me, and I read it in my office:

MGMT receptors are methylated.
